Pregnancy, Family Resource Center to open El Dorado location ...

The Pregnancy Care Center changing, evolving and growing.

The ministry, beginning in Augusta in 1998, has served all of Butler County. In 2011, 129 families received assistance of some kind from the center.

But those services involve much more than pregnancy care. Recently, the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the group to more accurately reflect its mission.

The newly named Pregnancy and Family Resource Center will still work with women during their pregnancies. But the group will also focus on counseling with the fathers of those children to help create a better family life for the women, babies and families.

Beyond a new name, the center is also pursuing a second location. Augusta has always been home to the ministry. Soon, there will be an El Dorado location as well.

We want to have the same commitment to El Dorado, Director Liana Guy said at the Life is Sweet banquet Tuesday night.

She said the center has entered into a partnership with Choice Medical Clinic in Wichita to provide ultrasound services when the new facility opens in El Dorado.

More than 90 percent of abortion minded clients chose to keep their babies after seeing an ultrasound, Guy said. Only 20 percent chose life without it.

Volunteers at the center provide many services to pregnant women and their families.

Until abortion becomes an unthinkable option, we will stand in the gap for these men and women and their babies, Guy said.

Santorum is back with Super Tuesday wins

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (AP) ? Republican Rick Santorum is back.

After four straight losses to Mitt Romney, the former Pennsylvania senator won at least three states ? Oklahoma, North Dakota and Tennessee ? on Super Tuesday. He was aggressively challenging Romney in the night's marquee race in Ohio.

Even before all the states were decided, it was clear that Santorum's position as Romney's chief Republican opponent was still intact.

"This was a big night tonight," Santorum told cheering supporters at a local high school. "We have won in the West, the Midwest and the South, and we're ready to win across this country."

The victories, which come as 10 states held elections from Alaska to Vermont, gave the Santorum campaign a badly needed shot of momentum. Romney was coming off a four-state win streak and had won Tuesday in Massachusetts, Vermont and Virginia, with a handful of races too close to call.

Newt Gingrich won his home state of Georgia.

Santorum's victories in two southern states seemed to be enough to fuel his underdog campaign, despite increasingly calls for the candidates to rally around front-runner Romney. But a victory in Ohio could reshuffle the Republican contest, sending a powerful message that Romney's grasp on his party's nomination is by no means assured.

"Tonight it's clear. It's clear. We've won races all over this country against the odds," Santorum said. "When they thought, 'Oh, OK, he's finally finished,' we keep coming back. We are in this thing."

An unapologetic social conservative, Santorum has cast the race in biblical terms: He's David vs. Romney's Goliath. Even that "is probably a little bit of an understatement," Santorum said Monday.

The former senator from neighboring Pennsylvania has a shell of a campaign in Ohio, with no state headquarters and a bare-bones staff. In Romney he faced a challenger who enjoys a massive cash advantage and a political machine that's produced high-stakes victories in other states when his front-runner status was in doubt.

Santorum celebrated in Steubenville, an eastern Ohio town just a 90-minute drive from his own Pennsylvania hometown.

Earlier in the day, he delivered an in-person address to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual conference in Washington. He immediately criticized Tuesday's offer by the U.S., European countries, Russia and China to resume talks with Iran on its suspected nuclear weapons program, calling it "another appeasement, another delay, another opportunity for them to go forward while we talk."

Speaking Tuesday night with his 93-year-old mother at his side, Santorum largely set aside his aggressive social agenda and focused instead on his family's blue-collar roots.

"Not too many presidential candidates come to Steubenville, Ohio, much less hold their victory party in Steubenville, Ohio," he said. "This is our roots."

Oregon health care picks up where Obama left off

SALEM, Ore. (AP) ? Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber recently signed a health care overhaul that he says will improve care, reduce costs and serve as a model for the rest of the nation.

Supporters say that if all 50 states adopted Oregon's changes, the federal budget would save more than $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years.

But critics say such savings are unlikely and that if the program works, more people will use health care benefits and cause costs to rise. Also, a recent Congressional Budget Office report found that similar programs run on a trial basis did not provide conclusive evidence of savings.

But Oregon proponents, led by Kitzhaber, say their plan is different and point to trial programs around the state as examples.

Why a book on death? ? Don't Stop Believing

My last two books have addressed consecutively the topics of hell and death, so I guess I?m mired in my blue period. I wouldn?t say I?m totally depressed, but my next project may be a history of the Chicago Cubs.

The idea of writing a book on death occurred to me while watching Tom Brokaw?s television special on the Baby Boomers. Here was the largest generation in American history, and most of them seemed terrified of aging. They were trying exercise, diets, pills, injections?anything that might allow them to look and feel younger for a little while longer. But of course, someday they will face the cold hard truth of their mortality. Was there a resource for them?

My research uncovered little that could speak honestly?and with hope?into their deepest need. Most books and blog posts on death are head over heels in denial. They try to persuade us that death is natural, a normal part of the circle of life, and that it really isn?t as awful as the dying person thinks. But do people really talk this way to their friends who are dying? ?This stinks for you, but your passing is a necessary step in our cosmic ecosystem. Think of the young person who can now take your job and feed his family. See, it?s all good.?

The Last Enemy is different from other books on death because it speaks directly to the person who is dying (or a young person who is rightly troubled by her mortality). It is honest?the first half of the book lays out the overwhelming devastation of death. Death is the unbeatable enemy that utterly destroys everything in its path. And one day it will take direct aim at us.

The Last Enemy brims with hope. We can?t beat death, but we know someone who has. The second half of the book explains how Jesus has defeated our enemy and how we may join his victory. So while we are right to fear death (Augustine said that the person who isn?t afraid of death has stopped thinking), we need not cower before it. We may face our impending doom with the confidence that only comes from placing our weight on the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Along the way The Last Enemy also uncovers the mystery of heaven. What will heaven be like? What will we do there? And what is our ultimate home? I?ve covered similar ground in Heaven Is a Place on Earth, but here I devote an entire chapter to the consummation. God will not only redeem his creation, but in some spectacular ways he will consummate it. The end will far surpass the beginning. I tell you how.

So that?s the pitch. Future posts will explain a few of the things I learned while researching The Last Enemy. For now I commend it to anyone who is bothered by death or knows someone who is. The book is available on amazon or for a discount at the publisher?s website.
