Nuggets waive reserve center 'Birdman' Andersen

DENVER -- The Denver Nuggets have waived reserve center Chris "Birdman" Andersen.

The team announced the move Tuesday. Andersen averaged 5.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.44 blocked shots in 32 games with the Nuggets last season.

He first joined the Nuggets as an undrafted free agent in 2001 and left for New Orleans in 2004. NBA officials suspended him in 2006, citing violations of the league's drug policy, but he later rejoined the Nuggets.

?

The Nuggets made the playoffs last season, but Andersen didn't play. The Nuggets had excused him from team-related activities after Douglas County sheriff's deputies searched his home as part of an investigation by the department's Internet Crimes Against Children unit. No criminal charges have been announced.

Bomb threat fails to halt Detroit Tigers game

DETROIT -- Baseball stadium Comerica Park is the latest Detroit landmark to be the subject of a bomb threat.

Police say an anonymous caller issued the threat in a 911 call around 8 p.m. Tuesday as the Tigers were hosting the Los Angeles Angels in front of 34,000 fans.

No announcement was made, nor was there a call for an evacuation as police searched the ballpark for an explosive device.

Detroit police Sgt. Eren Stephens says no device was found.

The threat followed two similar incidents in less than a week that shut down a tunnel and a bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, for hours.

Penn State to respond soon to NCAA demand for info

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. --As the NCAA considers whether Penn State should face penalties following the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal -- including a possible shutdown of its celebrated football program -- the university says it will respond within days to the governing body's demand for information.

?

The head of the NCAA has declared that the so-called death penalty has not been ruled out for Penn State, but university president Rodney Erickson said Tuesday he doesn't want to "jump to conclusions" about possible sanctions.

?

The NCAA is investigating whether Penn State lost "institutional control" over its athletic program and violated ethics rules. Its probe had been on hold for eight months while former FBI Director Louis Freeh conducted an investigation on behalf of the school's board of trustees. Freeh's 267-page report, released last week, asserted that late football coach Joe Paterno and three top officials buried allegations against Sandusky, his retired defensive coordinator, more than a decade ago to protect the university's image.

Sandusky was convicted last month of sexually abusing 10 boys over a 15-year period. He awaits sentencing.

?

Erickson said now that Penn State has the results of its own investigation in hand, it can turn its attention to the NCAA.

?

"The NCAA has indicated that they'd like me to respond ... as quickly as possible now that we have the Freeh report," he said. "So we've already started the process of starting to compose that response. We'll do so over the course of the next few days and get that response back as soon as possible, and we'll then engage in discussions with the NCAA."

?

In a PBS interview Monday night, NCAA President Mark Emmert said he's "never seen anything as egregious as this in terms of just overall conduct and behavior inside a university." He said he doesn't want to take "anything off the table" if there's a finding that Penn State violated NCAA rules.

The last time the NCAA shut down a football program was in the 1980s, when Southern Methodist University was forced to drop the sport because of extra benefits violations. After the NCAA suspended the SMU program for a year, the school decided not to play in 1988, either, as it tried to regroup.

Erickson would not say whether he thought Penn State deserved to have its football program yanked.

?

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves here," Erickson told The Associated Press as he conducted a round of media interviews in his office on Tuesday. "Let's wait for this process to unfold. President Emmert has said that the NCAA will take a deliberate and deliberative process in addressing this, so I don't think we should jump to any conclusions at this point."

got my test comin up and i plan on passin rollon the 31st hehe i already got me a car its 1.3L and i been lookin around for some insurance online and all gettin realy high price.

This would have been such an obvious decision in February.

Jeremy Lin was Kobe Bryant's equal on the court and at the souvenir stand during a mesmerizing stretch that Commissioner David Stern said he had "never quite seen anything like."

No way the New York Knicks were letting Lin get away back then, when he was the biggest thing in basketball.

Things are different now.

Lin no longer plays for a coach whose offense seems designed for him. He's coming off knee surgery and would come at a monstrous cost ? thanks to an offer sheet from the Houston Rockets he signed ? even for one of the league's richest teams.

So what once would have been an easy answer now creates so many questions.

Do the Knicks want Lin back?

Does Lin want to come back?

When will it be resolved?

The last one should be easiest, but this being the Knicks, isn't exactly. Teams have three days to match an offer sheet for their restricted free agents, so the Rockets believe the clock expires at 11:59 EDT on Tuesday night.

Except the Knicks have never confirmed if they received the offer sheet from the Rockets on Saturday, so it's possible they have a different deadline in mind, which could even lead to some kind of dispute or protest.

The contract is for three years and about $25 million, an enormous figure for someone who has made 25 starts. After paying Lin about $5 million per year the first two seasons, it balloons to nearly $15 million in the final year but would cost the Knicks more than twice that in luxury tax payments under the harsher penalties in the new collective bargaining agreement.

The terms of the original offer Lin had agreed to were four years and about $28 million, creating speculation that he went back to the Rockets and asked for something that would be tougher for the Knicks to match.

A number of fans want them to do it anyway, more than 5,000 signing an online petition at Change.org asking the Knicks to keep him. Team officials, who repeatedly said they intended to keep Lin before he signed the offer, won't comment on their plans now.

"I hope we get it done, man. I hope we can get it done," Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony said. "I would love to see him back, honestly, I would definitely love to see him back. But knowing the business of basketball, it's kind of a tough situation, kind of for both parties. With Jeremy, I know he definitely would want to be back in New York, and with the team, (owner James) Dolan definitely wants him back. But it's just a matter of figuring it out."

Anthony had called the Rockets' offer a "ridiculous contract" on Sunday and said he wasn't surprised by the backlash that followed.

"It was ridiculous for them to do what they did, as far as throwing that out there and making it tough on us to sign him back," Anthony said.

Maybe the Knicks could have avoided this by making Lin an offer right away. Instead they let him find one elsewhere first, which is what many teams do with restricted free agents.

Given his popularity in New York and all the opportunities that affords, it's difficult to imagine he'd want to sabotage his chances of returning. Yet maybe he doesn't see the same potential for himself under Mike Woodson as he showed in Mike D'Antoni's pick-and-roll offense. Or perhaps he's one of the many who sees the futility of the Anthony-Amare Stoudemire pairing and doesn't want the burden of being the point guard charged with making it work.

And maybe the Knicks don't believe he is, anyway. They made a veteran point guard a top priority in free agency, missing out on Steve Nash but signing Jason Kidd. Then they agreed to a sign-and-trade with Portland to bring back Raymond Felton to New York in a deal that was completed Monday.

None brings the marketing potential of Lin, whose story of undrafted Harvard graduate to unexpected NBA star was a hit around the world. (How many other players went into free agency with "Time" magazine list of top 100 most influential people on their resume?)

That gives Houston plenty of reason to want him back. The NBA's first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese decent would continue to grow the popularity the Rockets already enjoy in Asia thanks to their retired star, Yao Ming.

The Rockets had Lin on their roster during the preseason before waiving him, with two point guards ahead of him on the depth chart and an open roster spot needed to add a big man.

It wasn't long before they wished they'd done differently, general manager Daryl Morey writing on Twitter during Lin's dazzling stretch, when he averaged 24.6 points and 9.2 assists in 10 games from Feb. 4-20, that cutting Lin was a mistake.

Now it's up to the Knicks. Keep Linsanity where it was born or risk the same regret.

One of modern cinema?s most celebrated writers, Charlie Kaufman?s work includes surreal fantasy Being John Malkovich, cerebral sci-fi Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and?comedy drama Adaptation. The three films mentioned were all nominated for an Academy Award with Kaufman winning the?Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay?in 2002 with?Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

In this post, we?re focusing on his screenplay ADAPTATION ? one of my all-time favorite movies about ?love, sex and death? set against a backdrop of attempting to write a screenplay about flowers. The stellar includes drugs, car chases, porn, masturbation and even a serial-killer. It is a comedy and a drama and a thriller and an action movie all in one.

This is a writers movie ? a movie about writers, both seasoned scribes and newbies. The film follows an article written for a magazine that becomes a book, then adapted into a screenplay. The writer goes to writing seminars, has writers block, struggles with the arc of his character, holes himself up and isolates himself from others in order to write, asks other writers for advice when stuck, etc. Can you relate?

Kaufman says the main character in the movie is the screenplay itself and its transformation.?At the core of the film is the concept of adaptation, which is roughly described in one scene as being a profound process and a way to survive in the world.

Google CEO Larry Page was back at the office last week after a mystery ailment causing the loss of his speaking voice forced him to miss last month's Google I/O developer conference, according to the company's chairman Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt updated reporters with the news about Page's condition at a fireside chat with media in Sun Valley, Idaho last Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It's not clear if Page has completely regained his voice, but Schmidt said, ""Larry is doing much better ... he seems fine," according to the Journal. The specific nature of Page's ailment has not been revealed.

Schmidt told shareholders in June that Page would be missing upcoming Google events, including Google I/O and the company's upcoming second-quarter earnings call on July 19. Schmidt didn't say if Page's plans regarding next Thursday's conference call with investors and analysts had changed given his apparent return to health.

Page continued to run Google the past few weeks despite his illness, Schmidt said. The 39-year-old CEO has been communicated via email and other forms of written messaging during his recovery.

Meanwhile, at the same fireside chat in Sun Valley, Schmidt talked up Google's self-driving car initiative, opining that "self-driving cars should become the predominant mode of transportation in our lifetime," according to Tech Crunch.
