Tips to Choose Area Rugs and Light Fixtures for the Dining Room

The dining room is a busy hub in your home. It's where you entertain and host parties or catch up with friends and family over dinner. Area rugs can be used to anchor the dining space and add a touch of elegance to the room. The right light fixtures such as chandeliers and pendants illuminate the room and enhance the overall decor of the dining room. Here are some tips to help you choose the right accessories for the dining room.

Choose area rugs that are perfectly sized -- a rug for the dining room should be about four feet larger than the length and width of your dining table. This way the dining chairs can be pulled back from the table while retaining the rug underfoot. The best layout for a dining room is to place the table in the center of the room and other dining room furniture such as china cabinets and sideboards around the perimeter of the table. The sideboard, china closet and other dining room furniture should be placed on the floor and not on the rug. If you like, you can use two different area rugs to segregate the different areas of your dining space.

The pattern and color of the dining room rug can be used to set the right tone in the dining area. Persian-style or Oriental rugs with intricate designs are excellent choices for formal dining spaces while solid rugs in neutral shades help to create relaxed and informal rooms. As the dining room is a heavy traffic area, choose area rugs in durable material like wool. Wool rugs are sturdy and they can bear the wear and tear well.

Selecting the right light fixtures is an important step of furnishing the space. Chandeliers and pendant lights are appropriate light fixtures for the dining room. A chandelier is excellent for providing ambient light and it creates a decorative focus for the room. Pendants are good sources of task lighting as they help to illuminate the area around a dining table. Use both a chandelier and twin pendants on either side to properly illuminate the dining room.

Set up a functional dining room and dine in style with these helpful tips.
