Here in Washington Rob McKenna recently said that Republicans are too obsessed with abortion and immigration and that the party needs to become ?more tolerant of libertarian views on those issues."
He had lots of company with current and former leaders of the party, who bemoaned the GOP's 'dark vein of intolerance,' and its questionable treatment of women and minorities.
But what about our so-called bipartisan group here in the state Senate? Apparently, they haven?t received the memo. They?re still committed to targeting women and immigrants, and they?re wasting no time doing it.
Sen. Mike Padden, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is sponsoring a bill requiring teenagers to tell their parents if they are pregnant and want an abortion. His original bill would have also criminalized doctors performing abortions.
On the first day of session, among the first bills introduced was a bill by Sen. Don Benton denying drivers? licenses to certain immigrants. And within the first week, Benton proposed a bill denying financial aid to ?illegals? without documentation of citizenship.
Not to forget freshman Sen. John Braun?s bill to repeal our state?s family and medical leave insurance program.
At the beginning of session, the Republicans? first-in-command, Sen. Rodney Tom, was quoted repeatedly in the press about how his majority is ?not going to let social issues divide our focus.? Really?
Reality tells a different tale.
