Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit (XAVB5001)

  • Netgear Powerline AV 500 Adapter Kit (XAVB5001)
  • Performance

It?s hard to beat the convenience of a home Wi-Fi network but it can?t touch wired connectivity when it comes to throughput speed. Unfortunately, wiring your home with CAT-5 cabling can get expensive and messy if you don?t know what you?re doing. Enter Netgear?s Powerline AV 500 Powerline Adapter Kit ($159.99 list), an incredibly easy to use solution that turns every power outlet in your home into a Gigabit wired Ethernet port. In my testing, the AV 500 delivered almost ten times the transfer speed of my Wi-Fi router. While that's less than a wired connection, it's just fine for streaming movies and transferring large data files and folders.?

Features and Design
The AV 500 kit consists of two XAV5001 Powerline adapters, two 6.5 foot Ethernet cables, and a Resource CD containing a Powerline Utility and an Installation Guide. Unfortunately, the disc does not include a user manual; instead, it provides a link to an online manual, which may be inconvenient if you?re having trouble getting the adapters to work for some reason. However, the odds of that happening are slim to none as Powerline technology is the epitome of plug and play.

Each adapter measures 3.3 by 2.5 by 1.5 inches (HWD) and weighs a little less than half a pound (0.4 pounds). The front of the housing has a glossy white finish and has the Netgear logo etched into the center and a blue Powerline AV 500 label at the bottom. At the top are three LED indicators; the power indicator glows a solid green when electrical power is on and blinks green when the adapter is starting up and running through the security setup process. An amber light indicates that the adapter has gone into power saving mode, which happens when the port is not linked for more than ten minutes. The Powerline indicator is solid green when a connection is made to the network, and it blinks when the adapter is receiving and sending data. It remains unlit if a compatible adapter with the same encryption key cannot be found, or if the adapter has been disabled via the Powerline Utility. This indicator also tells you how strong the link rate is for each electrical outlet. A green light means the link rate is better than 80 Mbps, amber means less than 80 Mbps but greater than 50 Mbps, and a red light means less than 50 Mbps.

On the right side of the adapter are a security button and a recessed factory reset button. The security button makes it easy to set a private encryption key that can be used across your entire Powerline network, and the reset button returns the adapter to its original factory defaults. On the bottom of the adapter is a single Ethernet port. Despite the vented casing designed to prevent the adapter from overheating while plugged in and running, the adapter was still quite warm to the touch after 15 minutes of use.

Installation
Powerline AV 500 installation is as easy as it gets as long as you follow a few simple rules of thumb. Always plug the adapter directly into the electrical socket; do not use extension cords, power strips, or surge protectors. Try to use an outlet that does not have power hungry appliances plugged into it, such as a washer, dryer, or refrigerator, and make sure that the outlets to be used are on the same circuit and use the same breaker box, otherwise they will not be able to communicate with each other.? For this reason Powerline adapters may not work in large apartment complexes or office buildings. You?ll also need an existing network and a router.

Florida's Mike Rosario cleared to face Rutgers

Florida junior guard Mike Rosario, who missed the Gators' last two games because of back problems, is expected to play Thursday against his former school, Rutgers.

Coach Billy Donovan said Rosario practiced in a limited fashion Monday and then went full-bore Tuesday and showed not problems Wednesday. Thus, he is expected to be in the starting lineup Thursday at Rutgers.

Rosario, a Jersey City native who led Rutgers in scoring as a freshman and sophomore, sat out last season because of transfer rules. He's averaging 9.4 points, shooting 41.7 percent from 3-point range, for the 10th-ranked Gators this season.

Running a country? There's an app for that, almost

(AP) ? Britain's government says experts are considering developing a bespoke iPad app that would deliver key data straight to Prime Minister David Cameron's tablet computer.

Officials said Wednesday that the idea is being discussed, though Cameron's Downing Street office declined to comment on the details.

The Times of London newspaper reported the app could include statistics and information from government departments, real time news and Twitter updates.

Cameron has previously discussed his affection for his iPad, but acknowledged he needed "a little bit of help from someone in IT" to set up the gadget.

The British chief has frequently championed the country's technology sector and hailed the so-called Silicon Roundabout cluster of digital companies in east London.

Scottish News: Government buildings energy G-rated

None of the Scottish Government's own buildings have achieved top energy efficiency ratings, prompting calls for ministers to lead by example.

Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats showed that six of the Government's 18 larger buildings - which account for 71% of the Government's overall floor space - had received the bottom two Energy Performance Certificate ratings.

Meanwhile, none of the buildings managed to achieve the top ratings.

Google activates 3.7 million Android devices over Christmas, but Apple still wins (Digital Trends)

android-and-ios-activations-localytics-graph

Not long ago, Google revealed that it is activating 700,000 Android devices per day. Well, Christmas has been kind to Android. Andy Rubin, head of Android, Tweeted that 3.7 million Android devices were activated on Dec. 24-25, meaning a lot of people got new phones for Christmas.?

iOS Christmas activations may be even higher, at least in the US. According to data released by Flurry, which tracks activations through the 140,000 apps that use its analytics service, 6.8 million new iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas Day alone, meaning that unless iOS and Android posted incredibly small and disproportionate activation numbers on Christmas Eve, iOS likely posted a lot more activations than Android. Even if Google had 80 percent of its Dec. 24-25 activations on Christmas Day, that means that it only activated about 3 million devices, which would then leave 3.8 million for iOS. It?s likely, however, that Apple?s lead is more substantial. Again though, our data is far from complete.?

Localytics reports that growth of combined iPod, iPad, and iPhone activations exceeded Android by a bit, though without actual sales to go by, it?s hard to say if iOS actually out-activated Android or not. In other regions of the world, like Sweden and South Korea (home country of Samsung), Android posted a healthy lead.

Did you get an iPhone or Android device for Christmas? A Kindle Fire counts, you know. What about your friends? It sounds like both companies had a great Christmas to us.?

Debt Crisis 2012: Forget Europe, Check Out Japan

By EconMatters

The recent?massive demand for ECB's LTRO?(Long Term Refinancing Operation)--nearly?490 billion euro in three-year 1% loans from 523 banks--only confirmed the suspicion of some market participants that European banks are having financing issues, and that the LTRO is unlikely to flow into the Euro Zone supporting the troubled sovereign debt and economy.

In addition to the current Euro crisis which we discussed here?and?here, Japan, the world's third largest economy, could have its own debt crisis as early as 2012 bigger than the Euro Zone. (see graph below)?

Japan has long been mired by an aging population, sluggish growth and deflation since an asset bubble popped in the early 1990s. ?The country already has the highest debt-to-GDP ratio in the world--about 220% according to the OECD -- and a debt load projected at a record 1 quadrillion?yen this fiscal year.

Based on a plan approved by the Cabinet in Tokyo on 23 Dec, the country is now looking to sell 44.2 trillion yen ($566 billion) of new bonds?to fund?90.3 trillion yen ($1.16 trillion) of spending in fiscal year 2012 starting 1 April. ?That will raise Japan budget?s dependence on debt to an unprecedented 49%.

According to?Bloomberg, the government projects new bond issuance will surpass tax revenue for a fourth year.?Receipts from levies have shrunk about a third?this year?after peaking at?60.1 trillion yen in 1990.??Non-tax revenues including surplus from foreign exchange reserves also halved to?3.7 trillion yen. Social-security expenses, now at 250% of the level two decades ago, will account for 52% of general spending next year

Moreover, an?April 2011 analysis?by CQCA Business Research showed that "Japan has an extremely near-future tilted debt maturity timeline" (see chart below). ?CQCA estimated that in 2010,?Japan was able to push 105 trillion yen into the future, but concluded it is doubtful that Japan will be able to continue this.

Indeed, as one of the major and relatively stable economies in the world, and since almost all of its debt are held internally by the Japanese citizens or business, Japan has been able to still borrow at low rates (10-year bond yield at 0.98%?as of Dec. 26, 2011), partly thanks to the Euro debt crisis going on for more than two years.

So as long as Japan could keep financing a majority of its debt internally without going through the real test of the brutal bond market, the country most likely would not experience a debt crisis like the one currently festering in Europe.

But the chips seem to have stacked against Japan now. ?On top of the new and re-financing needs, the Japanese government estimated that the economy will shrink 0.1% this fiscal year citing supply-chain disruptions from the earthquake and tsunami disaster in March, the strengthening of the yen and the European debt crisis. ?Moreover, S&P said in November that Japan might be close to a downgrade. ?After?a sovereign debt downgrade to Aa3 by Moody's in August, 2011, it'd be hard pressed to think Japanese?bond buyers would shrug off yet another credit downgrade. ?

Burgeoning debt, coupled with the global and domestic economic slowdown, and continuing political turmoil (Japan has had three Prime Ministers in the last two years, and the current PM Noda?s popularity has fallen since he took office in September), would suggest it is unlikely that Japan could continue to self-contain its debt.

It looks like its massive debt could finally catch up with Japan in the midst the sovereign debt crisis that's making a world tour right now. ?While some investors might see Japan as a bargain, it remains to be seen whether the country will continue beating the odds of a debt crisis.

Forecast favorable for most holiday travelers

Holiday travelers throughout most of the United States are getting the gift of good weather to help their travel plans this Christmas Eve.

On Sunday, Christmas Day, at least 99-percent of the country will not have any snowflakes in the air, AccuWeather reported.

"It doesn't get much quieter than this, this time of year," said Tom Kines, a meteorologist with AccuWeather.

But winter storm warnings in the southern Plains, rain and snow in Texas, and rain in the Pacific Northwest could snarl some travel plans in those areas.

Moderate to occasionally heavy snow will continue on Saturday to blanket parts of the southern Plains where winter storm warnings remain in effect, according to the National Weather Service.

The greatest accumulation is expected in far southeast New Mexico and areas west of Midland, Texas.

Along with the southern Plains, parts of Colorado, areas of the Northeast and the Great Lakes region will see a white Christmas with the snow that's already on the ground.

But most of the country will have no new snow on Sunday, with the exception of parts of the Northeast and Great Lakes region, which may see some snow showers. Rain is also expected in parts of the Southeast, reported AccuWeather.

"A large part of the country is going to be green or brown on Christmas Day," said Kines. "It stinks for Santa because he doesn't have the snow for his sleigh."

Kansas City, like most cities in the Midwest, is no exception. Temperatures there were forecast for 47 on Saturday and 48 on Sunday, under sunny skies.

Snowless Minneapolis
While snowless Christmases are not that unusual in Kansas City, they are more so for Minneapolis. Last year a winter storm 12 days before Christmas dumped 17 inches of snow on the city and caused the roof of the Metrodome, the Minnesota Viking's football stadium, to collapse.

This year, Minneapolis has no snow and will have temperatures in the high 30s over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

According to AccuWeather, El Paso, Texas, and Chicago are tied for seasonal snowfall so far with a total of 1.7 inches.

Video: Americans hit the road for holidays (on this page)

In a typical December, Chicago sees 8.5 inches of snow. To date this December, Chicago has seen the lowest amount of snow since 2003, according to Victor Murphy with the National Weather Service.

Drought-weary Texans are welcoming the snow and rain there. The worst one-year drought in the state's history sparked devastating wildfires, killed as many as half a billion trees, and prompted the most serious urban water use restrictions ever.

Story: Little to no snow this Christmas for northern US

Some of the most extreme water rationing will be lifted this weekend because of the rain. But Roland Ruiz, Vice President of the Edwards Aquifer Authority, which manages the underground reservoir, a main source of drinking water for millions of Texans, said the severe drought is still very much alive.

"Aquifer levels remain well below historic averages, and a return to severe restrictions is possible early in 2012," he said.

Texas needs 10 to 20 inches of rain in some areas just to return to normal levels for the year, and forecasters are not expecting anything close to that.

The National Weather Service's latest Seasonal Drought Outlook forecasts the drought to 'persist or intensify' across all but northeast Texas through March.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray Welcomes News of Drop in District?s Unemployment Rate

?

From Robert Marus:

Mayor Vincent C. Gray today welcomed new figures from the federal Department of Labor showing a significant drop in the District?s unemployment rate last month. The rate stood at 10.6 percent in November ? a drop of nearly half a percentage point over October?s 11.0-percent rate.

?

?Although we have a long way to go, I am encouraged by this significant drop in the unemployment rate,??Mayor Gray said.??This is a validation of our work to grow the economy and create jobs ? but I will not stop until every District resident who wants a job has a job.?

?

The federal statistics show the District gained 3,200 jobs in October, for a total of 719,000. The private sector added 4,000 jobs, while the public sector payrolls were reduced by 800 jobs.? The numbers are drawn from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) through its monthly survey of D.C. employers.?

?

Since January, the total number of private-sector jobs in the District has increased by 3.7 percent, or 17,100 jobs.?

DirecTV HDUI is rolling out across the land, iPad app adds 12 more live streaming cha

DirecTV began quietly seeding its HDUI to customers back in November, but judging by our tips inbox it has recently picked up the pace of the rollout. It's live in many areas already where you're probably enjoying the sweet, sweet new guide with its 16x9 graphics and speedier interface, but if you don't yet have it, check out the thread at DBSTalk with estimated rollout dates for many areas. Also by way of the forum comes word of 12 new channels including AMC, Velocity and HD Net that were just added to DirecTV's live TV streaming iPad app. Of course, the update still won't play nicely with jailbroken iPads, so a cracked version will be required in those cases. Check out the list of channels after the break, if you're not seeing them in the app try hitting the "edit" button at the top right, finding them in the list and clicking the green plus symbol to add them manually.

Do our medicines boost pathogens?

Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp

Scientists of the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITG) discovered a parasite that not only had developed resistance against a common medicine, but at the same time had become better in withstanding the human immune system. With some exaggeration: medical practice helped in developing a superbug. For it appears the battle against the drug also armed the bug better against its host. "To our knowledge it is the first time such a doubly armed organism appears in nature", says researcher Manu Vanaerschot, who obtained a PhD for his detective work at ITG and Antwerp University. "It certainly makes you think."

Vanaerschot studies the Leishmania parasite, a unicellular organism that has amazed scientists before. Leishmania is an expert in adaptation to different environments, and the only known organism in nature disregarding a basic rule of biology: that chromosomes ought to come in pairs. (The latter was also discovered by ITG-scientists recently.)

The parasite causes Leishmaniasis, one of the most important parasitic diseases after malaria. It hits some two million people, in 88 countries including European ones and yearly kills fifty thousand of them. The parasite is transmitted by the bite of a sand fly. The combined resistance against a medicine and the human immune system emerged in Leishmania donovani, the species causing the deadly form of the disease.

On the Indian subcontinent, where most cases occur, the disease was treated for decades with antimony compounds. As was to be expected, the parasite adapted to the constant drug pressure, and evolved into a form resisting the antimonials. In 2006 the treatment was switched to another medicine, because two patients out of three did not respond to the treatment. The antimonials closely work together with the human immune system to kill the parasite. This probably has given Leishmania donovani the opportunity to arm itself against both. It not only became resistant against the drug, but also resists better to the macrophages of its host. Macrophages are important cells of our immune system.

There is no absolute proof yet (among other things, because one obviously cannot experiment on humans) but everything suggests that resistant Leishmania not only survive better in humans have a higher "fitness" but also are better at making people ill have a higher "virulence" than their non-resistant counterparts.

Superbug?

It is the first time that science finds an organism that always benefits from its resistance. Normally resistance is only useful when a pathogen is bombarded by drugs; the rest of the time it is detrimental to the organism.

Resistant organisms are a real problem to medicine. More and more pathogens become resistant to our drugs and antibiotics to a large extend because you and I use them too lavishly and improperly. For several microbes, the arsenal of available drugs and antibiotics has so diminished that people may die again from pneumonia, or even from ulcerating wounds.

Luckily for us, resistance helps pathogens only in a drug-filled environment. In the open field their resistance is a disadvantage to them, because they have to invest energy and resources into a property with no use there. Just like a suit of armour is quite useful on the battle field, but a real nuisance the rest of the time.

So the propagation of resistant organisms is substantially slowed down because they are at a disadvantage outside of sick rooms. But this rule, too, is violated by Leishmania: even in absence of the drug, the resistant parasite survives better, instead of worse, and it is more virulent than a non-resistant parasite.

Did our medicines create a superbug? A legitimate question, and the phenomenon has to be investigated, but this sole case doesn't imply we better stop developing new medicines (as a matter of fact, the antimony-resistant Leishmania are still susceptible to a more recent drug, miltefosine). On the contrary, we should develop more new drugs, to give new answers to the adaptive strategies of pathogens, and we should protect those drugs, for instance by using them in combination therapies. In this never-ending arms race we should use our drugs wisely, to minimise the chances for pathogens to develop resistance.

$150 billion award for Texas fire victim's family (AP)

LA GRANGE, Texas ? An attorney says a Texas jury has awarded the largest verdict he has ever heard of ? $150 billion to the family of a man who died 12 years after being set afire as an 8-year-old.

Craig Sico says the punitive damage award is symbolic and the family expects none of it will be paid.

The defendant, Don Wilburn Collins, is currently imprisoned on an unrelated sexual assault charge. He was never charged and denies involvement in the 2010 death of 20-year-old Robbie Middleton.

Sico says he asked jurors to make a statement by topping the $145 billion Florida verdict against tobacco companies in 2000.

Neither Collins nor any attorney appeared for him at the civil trial. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice didn't respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

Because you got addicted to Swords and Sorcery/RP

roleplay/swords-and-students/

RP Theme

Well, There's the front door entrance to the school. This is what you get. You just got so addicted to roleplaying, you were sent to this shithole. You walked into the building, seemed normal at first. Then you got directed to the much darker areas, this basement thing full of bricks, and then you open the iron red doors, as you walk down into a small area where students can grab breakfast, check out the first part of the Divided Library to study, head into the school stores, and go to the bathroom generally. Not far was a guarded area with a flight of stairs, some bars, chains, fences, etc. As you progress further, you suddenly see the doors open, and 'students' begin to pour on in. Wanting to be apart of the crowd like the loser you are, you go among the last people there, down the stairs carved for your usage, and you fall flat on your face/chest (girls)/ass, and groan in pain before looking up: you realize the area above you was elevated much higher, and you are now certifiably screwed: you try to jump up to get away, hearing a strange slippery noise nearby in the darkness, and watch the students above crowd around and laugh at you, including those certain ones that you really hate, as you mutter a cuss word to yourself, and walk outwards where the path lit by torches leads, only to discover there is much less light up ahead, and that creepy slippery noise has returned.

This is your new life, you bunch of suckers. Enjoy it while you still can- oh, oh, riiiight. See, this is Sethar High for the Fantasy Roleplayer. Due to the fact you play D&D every friday night at the local game store where you camp out for the night, your possessions included are involved with all kinds of things RP, and more. Your only hope by way of romantic/lust interest will probably go there, and you don't want to be alone all your life. Unfortunately, you fail to realize the 'supplies' you bought were actual tools of the fantasy trade, and you have totally set your future with Sethar, and its dungeon. It does not qualify as a regular school, nor a boarding school but?well, a dungeon. Parents are usually like 'You wanted this, this is what you get.' So eff off if you haven't got the guts, or the guy-grapes to handle our prestigious palace of learning and awesomeness. Hell, at least our dungeons have stores, items, treasures, etc. Some REALLY leave you to die. Now, try to finish up before graduation. If you can't handle this, you can always join the Twilight Dungeon right here in town, not far behind. Yeah, that's the only place we'll allow you to escape to. And we know most of you don't want that. Not at all.

Shit, if you can get a questing group together, you may have lower chances of dying, And higher chances of dying together?better than nothing. Watch out for high level items, and remember: Everything is a trap. Like, 'totes.' Oh, BTW, you get all the uncommon classes. That means its more difficult combining your abilities, to outweigh your weaknesses.

Ha.

Wiz Khalifa Taps Into 'Nerdy Side' For 'Mac & Devin'

'I'm a square in the movie, and I pretty much maintain that squareness,' Wiz tells MTV News of his February film with Snoop Dogg.

Wiz Khalifa is a pretty cool guy, right? That's why it's so hard to imagine the Taylor Gang general as a geek, but in his and Snoop Dogg's upcoming film "Mac & Devin Go to High School," the Pittsburgh rapper plays just that.

"I'm super square in the movie," Wiz told MTV News, laughing backstage at his and Snoop's New York concert last week. "I'm a square in the movie, and I pretty much maintain that squareness. I mean, I walk on the wild side, I do some cool things, but I tapped into my nerdy side."

Though the "Mac & Devin" soundtrack hit stores Tuesday, the stoner comedy won't be out until February. According to Wiz, it wasn't as difficult for him to turn down his cool for the camera. "That's kind of who I am as a real person too; I was really reserved," Khalifa said about his high school days at Taylor Allderdice High in Pittsburgh. "I was really fall-backish, so I can totally connect with my character Devin in the movie. It was real easy."

Fans got their first real glimpse of Wiz as Devin in the duo's "Young, Wild & Free" video. In the clip which mixes movie scenes with performance footage, Wiz's character is seen wandering through the school halls looking extremely studious with his shirt buttoned all the way to the top. It was quite the transformation.

"I had to do makeup every day to cover my tattoos. I had to spray my hair to get the blond out, but it was cool. It was an experience, and it was really, really fun to be a novice at acting, be brand-new and then have to learn," Khalifa said. "I watched the movie, and I can actually see myself getting better in the movie."

NVIDIA open sources CUDA compiler, shares the LLVM love with everyone

A few years back, Intel prognosticated that NVIDIA's CUDA technology was destined to be a "footnote" in computing history. Since that time, Jen-Hsun Huang's low level virtual machine (LLVM) has more than proven its worth in several supercomputers, and now NVIDIA has released the CUDA source code to further spread the parallel computing gospel. This move opens up the LLVM to be used with more programming languages and processors (x86 or otherwise) than ever before, which the company hopes will spur development of "next-generation higher performance computing platforms." Academics and chosen developers can get their hands on the code by registering with NVIDIA at the source below, so head on down and get started -- petaflop parallel processing supercomputers don't build themselves, you know.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The musical based on the Academy Award-winning film "Once" is falling slowly onto Broadway.

Producers announced Tuesday that the show, which has been playing downtown at New York Theatre Workshop, will play Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre this spring. The musical ends its off-Broadway run Jan. 15.

"Once" features music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who won the 2008 best original song Oscar for "Falling Slowly."

The film and musical tell the story of an Irish street musician who falls for a Czech flower-seller in Dublin. The book is by Enda Walsh.

Broadway previews will begin Feb. 28 with an opening night set for March 18. It stars Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti.

The film was made for just $150,000 and grossed $20 million worldwide.

The Deep-Sea Find That Changed Biology

In 1977, a small crew of oceanographers traveled to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and stumbled across a brand new form of life. The discovery was so unusual, it turned biology on its head and brought into question much of what scientists thought they knew about where life can form and what it needs in order to survive.

Today, the Smithsonian Institution houses that remarkable discovery: a pale and fleshy, 4-foot-long worm that floats in the kind of pickle jar you'd see in your neighborhood delicatessen. It might not look like much now, but Kristian Fauchald, the Smithsonian's curator of worms, says that in 1977, this worm had everyone scratching their heads. At up to 7 feet in length, he says, "these are enormous beasts compared to normal worms." And they were thriving in large numbers without any obvious source of food or light.

"This," Fauchald says, holding up the worm,"is something absolutely unique."

Researchers named the area where they found the tubeworms the "Garden of Eden" because of the abundant life around the deep-sea vents. Enlarge Woods Hole Oceanographic Instution

Woods Hole Oceanographic Instution

Researchers named the area where they found the tubeworms the "Garden of Eden" because of the abundant life around the deep-sea vents.

An Unexpected Discovery

Kathy Crane and Jack Corliss weren't expecting to find anything alive when they started on their journey to explore the ocean floor. They were looking instead to answer some basic questions about the ocean's temperature and chemistry that science could not yet answer. "Saltiness was a big question." Crane says, "Students used to ask their professors, 'How did the ocean get its salt?'"

Some ocean scientists believed the answers to these questions lay in volcanic vents that they suspected peppered the ocean floor. So they put together an expedition in the Alvin, a tiny submarine operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, to go down and see for themselves.

Kathy Crane was then a 25-year-old grad student from Scripps Oceanographic Institute. From the Alvin's mother ship, she guided the Alvin to an area in the eastern Pacific known as the Galapagos Rift. Jack Corliss, a geologist from Oregon State University, rode aboard the Alvin itself.

Hey, can you biologists tell us what these things are? And they said, 'What? We don't know what that is. Hold everything!'

The day of the dive, Crane assumed her position as navigator and Corliss climbed aboard the Alvin. "I slipped through the porthole," he remembers. "It wasn't much bigger around than I was."

As the Alvin began its descent, Corliss watched through the window as the world around him went from blue to black to blacker than black. "We were descending into a different world," he says. Now and again, they saw sudden flashes of light from bioluminescent creatures swimming past the sub.

Back on the mother ship, Crane navigated the team towards the areas where they believed the vents were located. She also told the Alvin's pilot to look for "white clam shells against a background of black volcanic glass." From earlier imaging, they'd caught glimpses of what they thought were clamshells on the ocean floor, which they joked were tossed overboard from a Navy ship's clambake. It never occurred to the crew inside the sub that the shells were anything special. Until...

"I was watching my temperature measurement," Corliss says, "and just that time, the pilot said, 'There's clams out here!' "

The Alvin opened up the ocean depths to human exploration. As ocean scientist Kathy Crane explains in the audio clips below, the deep-sea sub offers an experience of our planet found nowhere else.

On A Different Sensory World

On Seeing New Species Of Life

On Undersea Communication

They'd found not just clamshells, but living, breathing clams that were a good foot-and-a-half long living alongside the hydrothermal vents. There were also mussels, anemones and brilliantly colored red-tipped worms ? up to seven-feet-long and anchored by slender white tubes swaying like a field of flowers.

"Absolutely stunningly beautiful," Corliss says. "The worms had white tubes and these beautiful red plumes, sort of like a three-dimensional feather. These feathers are sort of oscillating, undulating as they're pumping fluid into their body. It was amazing!"

The crew named the lush pocket of life "the Garden of Eden" and used the sub's mechanical arm to delicately gather up a bouquet of worms, mussels, clams and anemones. Once on the surface, they dropped them into containers of vodka ? the only preservative they had. Then Crane picked up the phone and called Woods Hole.

"Hey," she asked, "can you biologists tell us what these things are? And they said, 'What? We don't know what that is. Hold everything!'"

'How Do They Live?'

Today, back at the Smithsonian, Kristian Fauchald opens up a pickle jar and pulls out the very first worm ? Riftia Pachyptilla ? that Crane and her team brought up from the depths 34 years ago. "The really fun part," he says, "was trying to figure out what these animals are. How do they live?"

The key, he says, is that the worms don't use light but a "completely different energy source" in a process called chemosynthesis. The worm uses its red plume to absorb hydrogen sulfide ? that nasty stuff that smells like rotten eggs ? from the vent water. A colony of bacteria living inside the worm's gut gobbles up the hydrogen sulfide and uses it to create carbon compounds that feed the worm. Voila ? chemosynthesis!

In the months following the discovery of life near the hydrothermal vents, Crane says the excitement was intense, and the scientific community's biggest names came steam-rolling in.

"There were cases where people were stealing samples, clams and taking them off to their institutions and hiding them," she says. "You know, scientists can be extremely aggressive people to get what they want."

Eventually, Crane left the field of vent science. Today she is a senior researcher at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, working mostly in the Arctic.

Corliss says the discovery inspired him to change the focus of his work as he wondered whether these curious creatures, from such an inhospitable environment, might help explain how life started on Earth.

"It was quite amazing," he says. "It marked a transition in my life." Corliss has since devoted his career to studying the origins of life; today, he teaches biology at the Central European University in Budapest.

In the years since the original discovery, scientists have returned to the Galapagos Rift and the hydrothermal vents. The abundant "Garden of Eden" continues to thrive, and not far away, a new vent community of chemosynthetic life has begun to grow. Scientists have named the new site "Rosebud."

Boeheim regrets questioning Fine accusers' motives (AP)

SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim apologized for questioning the motives of the men who accused his longtime assistant of molesting them as minors, saying his comments were especially insensitive to the overall issue of child abuse.

"I believe I misspoke very badly in my response to the allegations that have been made," said Boeheim, who spoke slowly and paused frequently during a postgame press conference Friday. "I shouldn't have questioned what the accusers expressed or their motives. I am really sorry that I did that, and I regret any harm that I caused."

Former assistant coach Bernie Fine has been accused of child sex abuse by three men, including two former Syracuse ballboys. Fine, who was fired Sunday, has denied the allegations.

Speaking after No. 4 Syracuse beat No. 10 Florida on Friday, Boeheim said his initial comments were "insensitive to the individuals involved and especially to the overall issue of child abuse."

Boeheim said he spent time this week at the McMahon Ryan House for child abuse in Syracuse and plans to get involved to help raise awareness.

"I'm going to do everything I can to do that," he said, no matter whether he's coaching or not. "I've always been committed to kids. There's no question in my mind the issue of abuse is the No. 1 thing we should all be concerned about in this community."

Boeheim said his apology and regrets came from the heart.

"No one said this is what you should say," he said. "This is what I feel."

When the allegations first surfaced, Boeheim adamantly defended Fine and accused the men of lying for money.

"What I said last week was out of loyalty," he said. "I acted without thinking. I couldn't believe what I was hearing."

Advocates for sex abuse victims had called for Boeheim to resign or be fired for his disparaging remarks.

It's the second time in less than a week that Boeheim has softened his stance toward the accusers.

After Fine was fired Sunday, Boeheim released a statement saying he regretted "any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse."

One of the accusers, Bobby Davis, now 39, told ESPN last month that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis said the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four. Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in the fifth or sixth grade.

A third accuser, 23-year-old Zach Tomaselli of Lewiston, Maine, came forward Sunday. He said he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room after a game. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Secret Service are leading an investigation of child molestation allegations against Fine.

Earlier Friday, USA Basketball said Boeheim's spot on the coaching staff of the U.S. basketball team remained secure, though the U.S. Olympic Committee is monitoring the child sex abuse investigation of Fine.

Boeheim is the top assistant to Mike Krzyzewski on the team that will play at the 2012 London Olympics.

Asked about Boeheim's status, USA Basketball spokesman Craig Miller said, "Jim Boeheim is a member of the USA Men's National Team coaching staff.'"

The USOC declined comment, though a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the federation is following the issue. The person spoke to The AP on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Two high-profile Olympic sports have dealt with allegations of child sex abuse in the past two years.

In 2010, USA Swimming was hit by a number of sex-abuse allegations by coaches. More recently, 1984 Olympic gymnastics coach Don Peters was banned for life by USA Gymnastics after being accused of sexually abusing two athletes in the 1980s.

Over the past 18 months, the USOC has increased efforts to ensure safe environments for children who participate in Olympic sports.

The federation adopted a task force that encouraged the national governing bodies to adopt standardized policies to prevent abuse. It also hired an attorney to serve as the director of ethics and safe sport.

Boeheim was on the U.S. coaching staff in 1990 and returned in 2006.
