Shock Claim: Canadian Police Ignored Potential Evidence Of ...

The RCMP long suspected corruption in the construction industry involving the Montreal Mafia and dirty politicians but ignored possible leads in order to target the Rizzuto clan's drug trafficking business during its five-year investigation dubbed Project Colis?e according to Corporal Vinicio Sebastiano who testified yesterday before the Charbonneau Commission as reported by Monique Muse for The Gazette.?

Sebastiano testified that the potential evidence included video surveillance of some construction-linked people seemingly dropping off cash payments at social clubs where the Rizzuto clan allegedly conducted its business, and recorded conversations discussing construction companies and political parties.? However, "it was usually dismissed as 'non-pertinent' evidence" said Sebastiano:? "when construction or political parties came up, the tapes kept rolling but 'we weren't listening.'"? Those tapes will be played for the Charbonneau Commission in the coming days.

Although Sebastiano identified several big players in the construction trade who he claims visited the social clubs he "did not point the finger at any specific company executives who handed over the cash" as reported by CBC.

Tibet crisis might have driven hikers to Nepal peak hit by avalanche

KATMANDU, Nepal - The climbers killed in a weekend avalanche in the Himalayas were part of a crush of mountaineers who came to the slope because of heightened tensions between Chinese authorities and Tibetans.

China rejected climbing permits for mountaineers hoping to scale peaks in the Tibetan Himalayas, forcing many to crowd onto mountains in Nepal, according to alpine companies.

As a result, about 30 teams were registered to climb Mount Manaslu, a 50 per cent increase over last year, said Ang Tshering, who runs the popular Asian Trekking agency in Nepal.

About two dozen climbers were sleeping at a camp high on the mountain early Sunday when the avalanche swept over them. Rescuers have so far brought down the bodies of eight victims ? four French, one each from Germany, Italy and Spain, and a Nepali guide.

Tibet is a sensitive area for China, which sometimes limits access for foreign tourists. It has also in the past restricted the number of permits issued to climbers, and even stopped issuing them in 2008 while Chinese climbers took the Olympic torch to the top of Mount Everest before the Beijing Games.

Relations between Tibet and the Chinese government have been volatile this year, as many Tibetans set themselves on fire to bring attention to what they say is their suffering under China's repressive policies. China claims Tibet has always been Chinese territory, but most Tibetans say the Himalayan region was independent for much of its history.

Chinese officials did not accept applications for climbing permits this year, without giving any reason, said Tshering of Asian Trekking, who is also the representative for the China Tibet Mountaineering Association.

As a result, climbers who were planning to climb Cho Oyu or Shisapangma in the Tibetan region changed their destination to Manaslu, a popular choice because it was not as difficult a climb as other high mountains, Tshering said. It also has a relatively cheap $5,000 permit, compared to $35,000 for Everest during the autumn season.

Other mountains also saw an increase in traffic, Tshering said,

Bikram Newpane of the Kathmandu-based Himalayan Rescue Association, which helps mountaineers in distress, said China's ban on permits for climbing the northern face of the Himalayas in Tibet could have added to the dangers.

"It is never 100 per cent safe up on the mountains and the risks are always there. But there were more people on the mountains this year," Newpane said.

Overcrowding has been a concern because of limited space on trails and short windows of safety for summiting mountains.

Four people were killed on Mount Everest during the May climbing season when a traffic jam pushed dozens of climbers on the same narrow path to the summit, forcing many to stay too long at high altitudes and exhaust their oxygen supplies.

It is not clear if the extra people on Manaslu contributed to the tragedy. What does appear clear is that many would not have been on that mountain had their Tibetan climbing permits been accepted.

However, a crush of climbers could have benefits too, providing extra hands for rescue operations. Newpane praised the swift rescue on Manaslu, carried out by the trekking agencies that organized the expeditions.

Climbers also blame climate change for some of the recent tragedies on the Himalayan peaks, which have been hit by warmer weather that melts more snow and makes the surface unstable.

"The uncertainty of the weather condition has increased in the past few years on the mountains. The melting glaciers on the mountains make the grounds unstable," said Zimba Zangbu of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

Zangbu said it continued to rain for two weeks in Nepal during the monsoon season that just ended.

"When it rains in the rest of the country, it snows on the mountains. Manaslu was also blanketed with soft snow," he said, adding that this type of snowfall does not get packed on the mountain surface and can lead to avalanches.

The spring season is more popular for climbers because the weather conditions are better on higher peaks before the monsoon brings rain and snow. High winds in the area known as the death zone over 8,000 metres (26,400 feet) also make climbing difficult during autumn.

One of the biggest problems with batteries is the weight and bulky nature of their packaging. It is the major limiting factors for electric vehicles. Several years ago, to overcome this problem, scientists started researching ultra-thin batteries which would be able to hold the same charge but in a much smaller space. In 2009 researchers from the University of Stanford announced that they had created a battery out of a single piece of plain copier paper by using carbon nanotubes to store energy and generate electricity.

The announcement of such a thin battery led some to predict that one day someone would invent printable battery technology.?(More from Oilprice.com:?Japan Steps Away from Nuclear Power)

That day has arrived.

A team at Rice University has made a battery from paint. They created a lithium ion battery which they are able to paint onto virtually any surface.
In tests they combined the battery with a small solar cell and found that the system worked as a perfect energy generating unit. In one test the batteries were even able to power light-emitting diodes that spelled out "RICE" for six hours, with a steady 2.4 volts.?(More from Oilprice.com:?Ignore the Political Optimism, the Planet is in Trouble)

Neelam Singh, the team leader, said that she can already imagine integrating paintable battery technology withpaintable solar cells.

They have already filed for a patent, and are now looking to use the technology to create batteries that can be connected together like LEGO and attached to anything.

Conservative fund considers backing Mo. Rep. Akin

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? A conservative fundraising group that had shied away from Missouri Rep. Todd Akin is now seriously considering whether to come to the embattled Republican's aid in his challenge to Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, an official with the group said Monday.

The Senate Conservatives Fund, which has raised more than $11 million for other Republican Senate candidates, could provide a much-needed financial boost for Akin, who is facing a Tuesday deadline on whether to stay in the race. Akin vowed again Monday to remain in the contest. Appearing at a Kirkwood, Mo., rally with former presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich, Akin said there had been discussions with the super PAC but no official agreement on aiding him.

The group previously had shied away from Akin, in part, because of his past use of spending earmarks to direct federal money to specific local projects. Earmarks now are banned in the Republican-controlled House, and Senate Republicans have voted not to use them.

In the primary, Akin aired an ad that touted a life saved by federal funding that some considered an earmark. But in a statement to The Associated Press last week, Akin said he backs a prohibition on earmarks in some circumstances.

"I support a ban on earmarks that are inserted in the dark of night or that are used by party leaders to buy support for their wasteful spending bills," Akin said in the written statement. "However, I want to make sure that Congress does its constitutional duty and retains the power of the purse rather than giving unelected bureaucrats all the power in Washington, D.C."

McCaskill, a vocal opponent of earmarks, suggested Akin had changed his position on earmarks in attempt to get campaign cash.

Akin's campaign is hoping to capitalize financially this week by demonstrating his resolve to remain in the race despite calls by some top Republicans that he quit after making inflammatory remarks about rape and pregnancy.

"There's no poll that shows this race is impossible," Gingrich said Monday. "I believe by mid-October all of them (Republican supporters) will be in."

Tuesday is the deadline for Missouri candidates to get a court order if they wish to drop out of the race. Akin has other plans for the day ? a campaign bus tour.

Republican leaders are not expected to pitch in. But Akin could get some other help, from a political action committee built in part by tea party star Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

The Senate Conservatives Fund had remained neutral in Missouri's Republican Senate primary, which Akin won in early August. But since then, Akin has discussed and clarified his position on earmarks with the organization, one official said.

"Our understanding is he supports an earmark ban," Matt Hoskins, director of the Senate Conservatives Fund, said Monday.

The organization supports a ban or moratorium on earmarks that use legislation to direct a specific amount of money for a specific purpose in a certain state or congressional district.

Akin denied Monday that he had flip-flopped.

"The thing that makes it tricky for people to follow is there are a lot of different definitions," Akin said. "What I am totally against are things that are done in the dark of night, there's been no legislative approval and they're special deals for people."

He added: "The question is when you get into just plain amendments that have gone through subcommittees and committees and things like that, as long as those are not directed to any particular company ... those are things that, as we've talked to DeMint, we're exactly on the same page using the same definition. So there's been no change in our position. And no change in his position either."

Hoskins said the group is looking "very seriously" at supporting Akin, because it appears he will not drop out, still has a good shot at defeating McCaskill and generally aligns ideologically with the organization.

Akin has apologized repeatedly since a TV interview aired Aug. 19 in which he suggested that women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." After that remark, Akin lost the financial support of the Republican National Committee, the Republican senators' political committee and the deep-pocketed Crossroads group affiliated with Republican strategist Karl Rove. That nixed millions of dollars of planned TV advertising.

Since then, Akin has raised nearly $600,000 through a small-dollar, online appeal that has cast his candidacy as an anti-establishment crusade against both Republican Party bosses and President Barack Obama's administration.

During the primary, Akin had been criticized by Republican rivals for supporting earmarks. Akin responded with a TV ad in which the wife of a military veteran said her husband's life was saved by a newly armored Humvee financed at Akin's initiative through "what some call earmarks."

McCaskill has co-sponsored legislation with DeMint to ban earmarks, and her position has often put her at odds with her own party's leadership.

McCaskill's campaign suggested that Akin has shifted his views on earmarks in hopes of getting money for his Senate campaign.

"What kind of Washington politician runs an ad defending earmarks in the primary, then two months later, turns around and changes his position on a dime, for a dime? This is exactly the kind of transactional politics that makes people sick," said McCaskill spokesman Caitlin Legacki.

Concerns Over Bailout Funds Weigh on Euro, Lift ... - Forex Broker

The Japanese Yen and the US Dollar are leading the majors today as some risk-aversion has taken hold amid broadening concerns out of Europe. We note that these influences are three-fold: German business sentiment as measured by the IFO dropped further as investors remain reticent despite the European Central Bank?s ?bazooka? plan; the German Finance Ministry has dismissed reports suggesting that the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) would be leveraged from ?500 billion to ?2 trillion to accommodate the future bailouts of Italy and Spain; and media has concentrated on some disagreements between French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in terms of a pan-European banking union.

With respect to the ESM, the German Finance Ministry did note that no number has yet to be agreed upon for the leverage that will be employed, so essentially it is hapless to speculate on the size of the ESM. That?s that, for now.

With respect to the disagreement between French and German leaders, Chancellor Merkel refuted President Hollande?s quip that the banking union should be completed on a timetable of ?the earlier, the better.? With the ECB buying politicians time, it is off little surprise that the urgency behind implementing the necessary safeguards has died down a bit. But Chancellor Merkel is making sure leaders get this round of measures right even as financial markets ?are watching Europe [and] want to see results,? saying that ?[the banking union] has to be thorough, the quality has to be good and then we?ll see how long it takes,? she said.

Taking a look at credit, peripheral European bond yields are mixed amid the Euro?s weakness. The Italian 2-year note yield has increased to 2.231% (+11.7-bps) while the Spanish 2-year note yield has decreased to 2.973% (-2.7-bps). Likewise, the Italian 10-year note yield has increased to 5.080% (+5.2-bps) while the Spanish 10-year note yield has decreased to 5.716% (+5.1-bps); higher yields imply lower prices.

EURUSD: Price has traded below soft support at the 61.8% Fibo retracement (February 2012 high to the July 2012 low) at 1.2934 today, breaking to fresh lows unseen in the Fed?s QE3 era. The daily RSI has exited overbought territory and is trending lower, though the 4-hour RSI is close to oversold again with some significant diverging (given the relationship between price and RSI the last time the 4-hour RSI was at this level). Interim resistance lies at 1.2930/35, 1.2970/75 (5-EMA), 1.3145, 1.3165/70, and 1.3240. Near-term support comes in at 1.2820/30 (200-DMA, late-April swing high) and 1.2825/30 (20-EMA, 200-DMA).

USDJPY: The USDJPY continues to move lower off of the pullback at trendline resistance last week, spurred on by a general feeling of disappointment on the BoJ?s newest stimulus measures has created the ideal sell-off situation. Now that price is below 78.10/20, 77.90, 77.65/70 (June 1 low), 77.45/50, and 77.10/15 (September low). A close above 78.10/20 leaves open the possibility for a rebound to 78.60 and 79.10/30 (100-DMA, 200-DMA, descending trendline off of the April 20 and June 25 highs).

GBPUSD: The pair has pulled back to the key 5-EMA at 1.6210 (for an indication of short-term strength) and as noted last Thursday, ?the gap between the 5-EMA and the 20-DMA has started to turn lower, suggesting a compression of price is occurring. If the 5-EMA holds, we?re looking for further rallies; if not, support is close by.? This has proven to be the case the past few days, though a break of the 5-EMA is threatening today. The key 1.6120/40 level, broken on Friday, remains our guide for bullish/bearish price action. As long as the GBPUSD closes above said level this week, the door is open for a move towards 1.6400 by the end of the month. The former April swing highs at 1.6260 (by close), 1.6300 (by high) are in focus, now that the descending trendline off of the April 2011 and August 2011 highs broke last week. Below 1.6120/40 support comes in at 1.6030/35 (20-DMA), 1.5970 (ascending trendline off of August 2 and August 31 lows, former channel resistance off of June 20 and August 23 highs), and 1.5770/85 (late-August swing lows).

AUDUSD: The pair remains range bound the past several days, trading in a 120-pip range the past three-days. The descending trendline off of the August 9 and August 23 highs has kept the pair supported the past four-days, and it remains that the 20-EMA overlapping at 1.0420/25, a base could be building for the next move higher. As long as this level holds today ? despite the intraday spike lower ? we continue to look higher. Near-term resistance comes in at 1.0410/25 (descending trendline off of the August 9 and August 23 highs, 20-DMA, mid-August swing lows), 1.0480/85, 1.0550/60, and 1.0615/30 (August high). Support comes in at 1.0365/80 (last week?s low, 50-EMA) 1.0325 (200-DMA), and 1.0250/70.

Orioles lose to Blue Jays 9-5, split doubleheader

BALTIMORE (AP) ? J.P. Arencibia broke open a tight game with a seventh-inning grand slam, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat Baltimore 9-5 Monday night to earn a doubleheader split and drop the Orioles 1? games out of first place in the AL East.

In the opener, Adam Jones went 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Baltimore to a 4-1 victory. But the Orioles lost a half-game in the standings Monday to the New York Yankees, who won 6-3 at Minnesota.

The Orioles fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap and missed several bases-loaded chances to take the lead before Arencibia connected off Jake Arrieta to give Toronto a 9-4 cushion.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 41st home run for the Blue Jays, who snapped a seven-game skid. Arencibia, who came into the game mired in a 2-for-36 slump, finished with three hits and five RBIs.

Ricky Romero (9-14) allowed four runs, eight hits, four walks and a homer in five-plus innings. But a strong performance by the Toronto bullpen enabled the left-hander to end a 13-game losing streak over 15 starts since June 22.

Encarnacion put the Blue Jays up 2-0 against Wei-Yin Chen (12-10) with a two-run drive in the first inning. In the second, Arencibia hit a sacrifice fly and Anthony Gose added an RBI single.

Robert Andino singled in two runs in the bottom half, but Baltimore left the bases loaded. Nate McLouth hit an opposite-field drive to left in the fifth to get Baltimore to 4-3, but the Orioles again left the bases full.

After Moises Sierra homered for Toronto in the sixth, the Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in their half, bringing many in the crowd of 31,015 to their feet. Brad Lincoln replaced Romero and gave up a first-pitch RBI single to J.J. Hardy before striking out Jones. Chris Davis followed with a fly ball to Gose in left field, and Taylor Teagarden was thrown out at the plate after tagging up.

Baltimore also loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but scored only once on a double-play grounder.

In the first game, Orioles rookie Steve Johnson (4-0) allowed three hits over five shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.62. Half his big league wins have come against Toronto.

Although the Blue Jays got two runners on base in three of the first four innings, Johnson worked out of trouble on each occasion.

Jim Johnson, the fifth Baltimore pitcher, worked the ninth for his major league-best 48th save in 51 opportunities.

Jones' four hits tied a career high. Now in his seventh season, Jones has already set career highs with 32 homers and 101 runs, and the All-Star center fielder needs only three RBIs to eclipse his previous high of 83, set last year.

Jones added a single and a double in the nightcap and has hit safely in 19 of 23 games in September, with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

"Adam relishes competition," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He's obviously had a heck of a year. He's turning into quite a player."

Henderson Alvarez (9-14) gave up four runs, eight hits and three walks in 5 2-3 innings. He is 2-7 in his last 10 starts.

In the fourth, Davis walked and Jones followed with a drive to left to put Baltimore up 2-0. Ryan Flaherty hit a solo shot in the fifth, and Jones singled in the sixth and came home on a double-play grounder.

Toronto scored in the eighth on an RBI double by Rajai Davis. With runners on second and third and two outs, Darren O'Day came in to strike out Kelly Johnson.

NOTES: Toronto purchased the contracts of RHPs Shawn Hill and Bobby Korecky and transferred LHP J.A. Happ (foot) to the 60-day DL. ... Orioles LHP Randy Wolf is experiencing discomfort in his left elbow and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday. ... Seventeen of Jones' HRs have given the Orioles the lead. Baltimore is 23-8 when he homers. ... Toronto's first-game defeat was its sixth straight in Baltimore, its longest single-season skid in Charm City since 1980. The Orioles are 10-6 against the Blue Jays, clinching their first season series win over Toronto since 2004. ... Omar Vizquel got two hits to move into a tie with Mel Ott for 40th on the career list with 2,876.

Obama responds to Romney's tough talk on Mideast

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama, defending his foreign policy record at a time of anti-American rage in the Muslim world, fired back at suggestions from Republican Mitt Romney that the president has been weak with allies and enemies alike.

In an interview airing the night before Obama meets with other world leaders at the United Nations, the president said, "If Gov. Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say so."

It was Obama's most direct rebuttal yet to persistent skepticism by his White House rival on his handling of an unraveling situation in the Middle East. Romney has charged the U.S. stance has been marred by miscalculations, mixed messages and appeasement.

As far back as May, Romney was condemning Obama's response to unrest in Syria, dubbing it a "policy of paralysis" and calling for more assertive measures, such as arming the opposition to Syrian President Bashar Assad. As deadly anti-American protests erupted earlier this month in Libya and elsewhere, Romney sought to undercut what polling shows is a significant foreign policy edge for Obama by calling the president's handling of the situation "disgraceful" and decrying a lack of U.S. leadership in the region.

In a companion interview to Obama's appearance on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney broadened his reproach to include Israel, criticizing Obama's failure to meet with the U.S. ally's head of state, Benjamin Netanyahu, during the annual U.N. gathering. Romney called it a mistake that "sends a message throughout the Middle East that somehow we distance ourselves from our friends."

The White House has said scheduling precluded a meeting between the two leaders, who won't be in New York at the same time. With the final six weeks of a hard-fought election hanging over the U.N. summit, Obama has opted out of face-to-face meetings with any of his counterparts ? not just Netanyahu ? during his compressed U.N. visit.

But Obama pushed back on the notion that he feels pressure from Netanyahu, dismissing as noise the Israeli leader's calls for the U.S. to lay out a "red line" that Iran's nuclear program mustn't cross to avoid American military intervention.

"When it comes to our national security decisions, any pressure that I feel is simply to do what's right for the American people," Obama said. "And I am going to block out any noise that's out there. "

In a wide-ranging interview conducted the day after U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens was killed in an attack on Benghazi, Obama defended his foreign policy successes, noting he'd followed through on a commitment to end the war in Iraq and had nabbed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

He also waxed optimistic that winning a second term would give him a mandate to overcome obstructionism from congressional Republicans whose No. 1 goal, he said, has been to prevent his re-election.

"My expectation is, my hope is that that's no longer their number one priority," Obama said. "I'm hoping that after the smoke clears and the election season's over that that spirit of cooperation comes more to the fore."

Romney, in an interview conducted last week, sought to deflect attention from his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, over their differences in Medicare policy: "I'm the guy running for president, not him."

While reaffirming his commitment to lowering all income tax rates by 20 percent, Romney expressed no unease about his refusal to offer specifics, such as which loopholes and deductions he'd eliminate to pay for the cuts.

"The devil's in the details. The angel is in the policy, which is creating more jobs," Romney said, adding that he doesn't want to see overall government revenue reduced.

Addressing the seemingly unshakable charge of flip-flopping on policy issues, Romney pointed the finger at Obama, noting his changes of heart on gay marriage and military tribunals for terrorism suspects.

"Have I found some things I thought would be effective turned out not to be effective? Absolutely," Romney said. "You don't learn from experience, you don't learn from your mistakes ?why, you know, you ought to be fired."

The series of interviews also offered glimpses into both candidates' personal habits, including their late-night routines. Romney said his nightly prayer is a time to connect both with the divine and with his own thoughts, and said he asks God mainly for wisdom and understanding.

Obama, describing himself as "a night guy," said that after first lady Michelle Obama and their daughters retire around 10 p.m., he hunkers down for reading, writing and occasionally a moment alone on the Truman Balcony, with the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial in view.

"Those are moments of reflection that, you know, help gird you for the next challenge and the next day," Obama said.

The "60 Minutes" interviews came as Romney's campaign strove to turn the page on a week of public stumbles and Republican hand-wringing, promising a redoubled effort in the most competitive states to undercut Obama's economic record as voters tune in for the final six weeks of a deadlocked race.

A secretly recorded video released last Monday showed Romney writing off his prospects for winning over the almost half of Americans who he said pay no taxes, are dependent upon government and see themselves as victims dominated the week. Ahead of an evening campaign stop at a Denver-area high school Sunday, Romney huddled with senior advisers in Los Angeles to rehearse for the three upcoming presidential debates, which his aides see as the best opportunity to get his campaign and its message back on track.

Amid mounting pressure to spend less time raising money and more time explaining his plans to voters, Romney was refocusing his schedule on the most competitive states. After Colorado, Romney was to begin a three-day bus tour in Ohio on Monday followed by a stop in Virginia ? states that Obama won in 2008 but that Republicans claimed four years earlier.

While national polls remain tight, polls in several of the most closely watched states, including Colorado, suggest Obama has opened narrow leads. Obama won Colorado by 9 points four years ago, but the state went to a Republican in the previous three presidential elections.

Obama took a rare weekend break from the campaigning ahead of his U.N. address Tuesday, but dispatched top allies to the Sunday talk shows to try to keep Romney's missteps alive in the minds of a dwindling cadre of undecided voters.

Study shows ancient relations between language families

Friday, September 21, 2012

How do language families evolve over many thousands of years? How stable over time are structural features of languages? Researchers Dan Dediu and Stephen Levinson from the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen introduced a new method using Bayesian phylogenetic approaches to analyse the evolution of structural features in more than 50 language families. Their paper 'Abstract profiles of structural stability point to universal tendencies, family-specific factors, and ancient connections between languages' was published online on September 20, 2012 in PLoS ONE.

Language is one of the best examples of a cultural evolutionary system. How vocabularies evolve has been extensively studied, but researchers know relatively little about the stability of structural properties of language - pholonoly, morphology and syntax. In their PLoS ONE paper, Dan Dediu (MPI's Language and Genetics Department) and Stephen Levinson (director of MPI's Language and Cognition Department) asked how stable over time the structural features of languages are ? aspects like word order, the inventory of sounds, or plural marking of nouns.

"If at least some of them are relatively stable over long time periods, they promise a way to get at ancient language relationships," the researchers state in their paper. "But opinion has been divided, some researchers holding that universally there is a hierarchy of stability for such features, others claiming that individual language families show their own idiosyncrasies in what features are stable and which not."

Ancient relations between language families

Using a large database and many alternative methods Dediu and Levinson show that both positions are right: there are universal tendencies for some features to be more stable than others, but individual language families have their own distinctive profile. These distinctive profiles can then be used to probe ancient relations between what are today independent language families.

"Using this technique we find for instance probable connections between the languages of the Americas and those of NE Eurasia, presumably dating back to the peopling of the Americas 12,000 years or more ago," Levinson explains. "We also find likely connections between most of the Eurasian language families, presumably pre-dating the split off of Indo-European around 9000 years ago."

Universal tendencies and distinctive profiles

This work thus has implications for our understanding of differential rates of language change, and by identifying distinctive patterns of change it provides a new window into very old historical processes that have shaped the linguistic map of the world. It shows that there is no conflict between the existence of universal tendencies and factors specific to a language family or geographic area. It also makes the strong point that information about deep relationships between languages is contained in abstract, higher-level properties derived from large sets of structural features as opposed to just a few highly stable aspects of language. In addition, this work introduces innovative quantitative techniques for finding and testing the statistical reliability of both universal tendencies and distinctive language-family profiles.

"Our findings strongly support the existence of a universal tendency across language families for some specific structural features to be intrinsically stable across language families and geographic regions," Dediu concludes.

Pakistan 'Day of Love' protests over film turn deadly

Hundreds protest against an anti-Islam film in Pakistan by setting a cinema on fire on a day the Pakistani government has called for peaceful demonstrations. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 1:10 p.m. ET: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan --?Protests by tens of thousands of Pakistanis infuriated by an anti-Islam film descended into deadly violence on Friday, with police firing tear gas and live ammunition in an attempt to subdue rioters who hurled rocks and set fire to buildings in some cities.

NBC News reported that 12 people died in Karachi with another three dead in Peshawar during the protests. More than 100 people were injured.

Friday had been declared a national holiday by Pakistan's government so people could rally against the video.

There were also protests in at least half a dozen other countries, with American flags and effigies of President Barack Obama burned.

Mohammad Amir, a driver for a Pakistani television station, was the first to die in Pakistan.

He was killed when bullets hit his vehicle in the northwest city of Peshawar, said Kashif Mahmood, a reporter for ARY TV who was also sitting in the car at the time.

The TV channel showed footage of Amir at the hospital as doctors tried to save him. It also showed the windshield of the vehicle, shattered by several gunshots.?Police could not immediately be reached for comment about the death of Amir.

In Karachi, armed protesters among a group of 15,000 fired on police, killing one and wounding another, police officer Ahmad Hassan said. The crowd also burned two cinemas and a bank, he said.?

The film denigrating the Prophet Muhammad has sparked unrest in many parts of the Muslim world over the past 10 days.?A United Nations official said prior to Friday's deaths that about 30 people, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, had been killed in the violence.

Much of the anger has been directed at the U.S. government even though the film was privately produced in the U.S. and American officials have criticized it for insulting Muslims.

Slain ambassador's mom: 'He was trying to do something much bigger'

Western diplomatic missions throughout the Muslim world tightened security, with some closing down on expectation of big protests after Friday prayers.?Cartoons mocking the Prophet Muhammad published in a French magazine on Wednesday were expected to compound the anger.

French officials have ordered extra security around the country and at its embassies around the world after a satirical magazine published cartoons ridiculing the Prophet Muhammad. ?NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports from Paris.

Pakistan's government had encouraged people to protest peacefully Friday, which it described as the "Day of Love for the Prophet Muhammad."

"An attack upon the Holy Prophet is an attack on the whole 1.5 billion Muslims. Therefore, this is something unacceptable," Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said in a speech to politicians and religious leaders.

Akbar Saeed Farooqi, spokesman for a religious organization that helped organize demonstrations, said, "our heart is crying bloody tears. We can bear everything but disrespect to our Prophet and Quran," he added.

Crowds of angry protesters showed up in Kabul, Afghanistan and Jakarta, Indonesia. The violent uprising followed a deadly weekend marking the deaths of eight International Security Assistance Force members. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

Several hundred protesters ransacked the two cinemas in Peshawar and set them ablaze.?A similar number of protesters also torched a toll booth on the outskirts of the capital, Islamabad. Police fired tear gas at the angry crowds in both cities.

Analysis: 'Manufactured outrage' behind Muslim protests

On Thursday in Islamabad, about 1,000 stone-throwing protesters had clashed with police as they tried to force their way to the U.S. Embassy.

At the consulate where four Americans died security consisted of one U.S. regional security officer and a local militia. Ambassador Chris Stevens often had little personal security detail. NBC's Lisa Myers reports.

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan has been running television advertisements, one featuring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the government had nothing to do with the film.

Protests in the Muslim world
Protests went off peacefully in the Arab world, where last week several embassies were attacked and the U.S. envoy to Libya was killed in an initial burst of unrest over the film.

A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo, but were kept away from the premises by police deployed in large numbers to avoid a repeat of violence at the U.S. embassy last week.

In Indonesia, which has?the world's biggest Muslim population,?the U.S. and French embassies were closed in Jakarta Friday.

Lebanon's Hezbollah-run al-Manar television showed thousands of people waving Lebanese and yellow Hezbollah flags as they marched past the Roman ruins of Baalbek and shouted slogans such as "Death to America, death to those who insult the Prophet".

Diplomatic missions in the Afghan capital, Kabul, were on lockdown.

Police in Kabul said they had been in contact with religious and community leaders to try to prevent violence.

"There are some angry demonstrators who will encourage people to violence," senior police officer Mohammad Zahir told Reuters. "There will also be Taliban influence in demonstrations too and they may attack the U.S. and other embassies."

Protests in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif only attracted a few hundred people and no violence was reported, but a cleric told one crowd: "If you kill Americans, it's legal and allowable."

Pakistan added to growing no-go list for Americans

The cartoons in France's Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly have provoked relatively little street anger, although about 100 Iranians demonstrated outside the French Embassy in Tehran.

Images of daily life, political pursuits, religious rites and deadly violence.

In Yemen, Western embassies in the capital Sanaa tightened security, fearing the cartoons could lead to more unrest after crowds attacked the U.S. mission there last week over the anti-Islam film.

In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring revolts, the Islamist-led government decreed a ban on protests planned on Friday against the cartoons.?

An Islamist activist called for attacks in France to avenge the perceived insult to Islam by the "slaves of the cross."

In a statement before her meeting with Tunisian Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalem, Clinton said she and the president are continuing to monitor events around the world closely in the wake of the attacks and protests on American diplomatic posts.

"We've taken a number of steps around the world to augment security and to protect our personnel at diplomatic posts," Clinton said.? In Tunisia, where the embassy and an American school were damaged, Clinton said the government is helping secure the locations and she stressed the importance of bringing those responsible for the assault to justice.

Protests ignited by a controversial film that ridicules Islam's Prophet Muhammad spread throughout Muslim world.

About 10,000 Islamists gathered in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, after Friday prayers, chanting slogans and burning U.S. and French flags and an effigy of Obama.

In Libya, where militias that helped overthrow Moammar Gadhafi still wield much power, the foreign minister offered a further apology for U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens' death to visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns on Thursday.

Around 30,000 Libyans marched through the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday in an unprecedented protest to demand the disbanding of powerful militias in the wake of last week's attack.

Canadian auto union has deals with 2 of Big 3

TORONTO (AP) ? Canadian autoworkers have reached contract deals with two of the Big Three and now are focusing in on the third ? Chrysler.

The Canadian Auto Workers union said late Thursday it reached a tentative deal with General Motors Co., leaving Chrysler as the only Detroit automaker that hasn't agreed to a new labor deal.

CAW President Ken Lewenza called it a difficult few days but said GM ultimately agreed to the framework of a deal that the union reached with Ford Motor Co. earlier this week.

The union decided to keep working past a midnight Monday strike deadline after reaching a deal with Ford and extending its contracts with GM and Chrysler.

Workers stayed on the job as talks continued, but the union warned it could go on strike after giving GM and Chrysler 24 hours' notice. They wanted the Ford contract to serve as a template for the other two companies.

Like the Ford deal, the GM agreement cuts wages for new hires and freezes pay for current workers. But it also gives them lump-sum payments to cover inflation and for ratifying the deal.

Under the Ford and GM deals, the companies will pay new workers 60 percent of the current top wage of $33.89 Canadian dollars ($34.74) an hour, according to the CAW. That would mean new workers would be paid around $20.33 Canadian ($20.84). They can move up the wage scale and reach the top wage in 10 years.

"We're avoiding a permanent two-tier wage system which was the stumbling block today," Lewenza said.

U.S. workers at the Detroit automakers approved a similar two-tier wage agreement five years ago, but in those agreements, workers don't automatically get the top wage after 10 years.

Lewenza said Chrysler hasn't agreed to the pattern set by Ford.

"As long as we're making progress there is no need to pull the trigger," Lewenza said of the possibility of putting Chrysler on 24-hour strike notice. "The trigger is the last tool in the tool box."

Canadian Ford auto workers will vote this weekend on the tentative agreement and the union said results of the vote will be released Sunday night. There was no immediate word when GM workers would vote on their deal.

The auto companies say Canada is the most expensive place in the world to make cars and trucks, and they could move production south if the CAW doesn't cut costs. The CAW represents about 21,000 auto workers in Canada and about 16 percent of auto production in North America.

"This set of talks with our labor partner have been candid and constructive, reflecting the challenges facing Canadian manufacturers," GM said in a statement.

GM and Chrysler make popular models in Canada that would soon be in short supply if a strike occurred. CAW workers also make key engine parts and other components for U.S.-built cars. In Canada, GM makes the Chevrolet Camaro, Impala and Equinox, along with the Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS and GMC Terrain. Chrysler makes minivans and the Dodge Challenger and Charger, Chrysler 300, and Ram Cargo Van in Canada.

Canada's advantages in the past ? a weak Canadian dollar and government health care ? have all but vanished compared with U.S. factories. In addition, the United Auto Workers union in the U.S. has agreed to steeper concessions than the CAW, making U.S. labor costs cheaper. Going into the talks, the Detroit automakers were paying an estimated $60 to $62 an hour for labor and benefits in Canada, compared with $50 an hour at Chrysler, $56 at Ford and $58 at GM, according to the Center for Automotive Research, a nonprofit research group.

The federal Canadian and Ontario province governments worked in tandem with the U.S. government on auto bailouts in 2009 to maintain Canada's share of North American auto production. Canada's share peaked at 3.2 million cars in 1999, about 17.4 percent of North American production. In 2011, Canada produced 2.1 million vehicles, or about 16 percent.

Every time an Apple product comes out, a select few reviewers get first dibs on testing it first. On Tuesday night, the iPhone 5 reviews wen... Read more

1 hr.

If you didn't stay up until 3 a.m. to pre-order an iPhone 5 last week, you were probably?too late to get one confirmed for shipment by Friday morning. So what do you do now??

There's no magical solution?that'll get you an iPhone 5 instantly, but there are ways to improve your chances of touching a shiny slab of glass and?aluminum?in days rather than weeks.

Since the lines in front of Apple stores are rather long ? and continually growing ? at this point, they might not be your best bet. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternatives.

"There are three ways to get an iPhone from Sprint," points out Sprint's Michelle Leff?Mermelstein: Retail locations, telesales line and website. The same situation applies for AT&T and Verizon Wireless,?the other U.S.?carriers which offer the iPhone.

If the answer you get online or by calling a carrier's sales hotline doesn't suit you, or involves a shipping date which is too far out?? like the one you'll see on the Apple website?? you're gonna need to lace up your boots and pound the pavement.

"The iPhone 5 will be available in AT&T retail stores beginning at 8 a.m. local time on Friday, Sept. 21," AT&T's Seth Bloom reminds us. So start your quest for Apple gold before the sun rises.

Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney suggests that you should not only?get to a store early, but also strategize as to which store you will visit.

"Select a store away from the center of the city or places where commuters and shoppers congregate," she told NBC News. "A?stand-alone store on the outskirts of town may be a better bet than the one in a mall."

Experience teaches us that stores in unpopular areas tend to receive a smaller shipment of iPhones in the first place, so it's worth calling ahead before you drive out into the middle of nowhere. And don't forget that the carriers' retail locations aren't the only alternatives to Apple's own stores???Walmart, Target, Best Buy and RadioShack will offer the iPhone as well.

And if all of that strategizing fails? Then you might as well just sit back down, head to Apple's site, and order an iPhone which will be delivered in three to?four weeks.

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Japan firms say China protests affect business plans: Reuters poll

TOKYO (Reuters) - About 41 percent of Japanese firms see friction with China affecting their business plans, with some considering pulling out of the country and shifting operations elsewhere, a Reuters poll showed, amid growing tensions sparked by a territorial dispute.

However, only a fraction of firms said improving relations with Asia should be at the top of the agenda for the next government, to be formed after general elections that must be held by around August 2013.

The poll comes as relations between Asia's two biggest economies have hit their lowest point in decades over a dispute centered on an uninhabited group of islands in the East China Sea -- known as the Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

Street protests in China have forced some Japanese firms to suspend operations in that country, and the share prices of Japanese firms with exposure to China have tumbled.

But the poll of 400 large and medium-sized firms, of which roughly 260 responded between August 31 and September 14, was taken before the worst of the protests, which damaged factories, restaurants and retail stores.

Firms in sectors such as wholesale, transport equipment and electric machinery were among those expecting the most fallout from worsening relations with China and other parts of Asia.

Some of the firms which see friction with China affecting business plans have suffered not only from rowdy protests involving damage and consumer strikes, but other problems as well.

"We were stranded at customs there even as we followed proper procedures for exporting parts," said one machinery firm.

A transport machinery company complained that it was excluded from bidding in China.

"We need to consider closing our base in China and withdrawing our personnel," said one metal products company.

Others voiced caution about investing in China, while considering putting off plans to make inroads into Chinese markets or seeking alternate sites.

China, the world's second-largest economy, and Japan, the third-largest, have total two-way trade of around $345 billion, but some experts believe anti-Japan sentiment could prompt firms to rethink investments in China in the longer term.

In the Reuters poll, 56 percent of firms urged the next Japanese government to put the utmost priority on steps to prop up the economy and stabilize currency rates, while only 2 percent cited smoother diplomatic relations with Asia.

With the dollar hovering around 78 yen, not far from a record low of 75.31 yen hit last October when Japanese authorities intervened heavily to stem their currency's gains, about one-third or respondents sought yen-selling intervention to help safeguard the export-reliant economy.

On the government's contentious plan to double the sales tax to 10 percent by 2015, 45 percent said it should be implemented as planned while 40 percent said the state of the economy at the time should be considered before making a final decision.

Only 10 percent called for putting off the sales tax rise, in stark contrast with the many lawmakers who are wary of a voter backlash over the tax increase.

Japanese firms brace for violence in China over disputed islands

Panasonic and Canon announced shutdowns in China on Monday and firms urged expatriates to stay indoors?after protests over Japan's purchase of disputed Islands got out of hand Saturday.

Japanese schools closed until further notice, Panasonic and Canon announced they were suspending operations at their Chinese plants, and Japanese firms were quietly advised by the authorities to keep their doors closed on Tuesday.

?We now have very ominous signs that this will be a lasting crisis,? ?Zhu Feng,?a professor at the School of International Studies at Peking University,?warns. ?At the moment there is no contact at any level between the two sides, though they urgently need to talk.?

The defensive moves followed a weekend of demonstrations in more than 20 Chinese cities that saw demonstrators attack Japanese diplomatic facilities, restaurants, and other businesses. Toyota and Honda auto dealerships were set on fire in the port city of Qingdao Saturday.

The officially sanctioned demonstrations, which gathered tens of thousands of people across the country, were called to express anger at the Japanese government?s decision last week to purchase from their private owner three of the disputed islands in the East China Sea. The uninhabited rocky outcrops are known in China ? which claims sovereignty over them ? as the Diaoyu and in Japan ? which controls them - as the Senkaku islands.

Some analysts suggest that Beijing has made a major issue out of the purchase at the behest of hardliners in the leadership, possibly including the People?s Liberation Army.?

?It seems that some elements would like to put down markers for the next government,? due to take over after a once in a decade leadership transition in the next few weeks. ?They hope to make it harder for the incoming administration to be flexible,? says one Western diplomat.?

Tuesday threatens to bring more violence.

Sensitive anniversary

The day marks the 81st anniversary of the Manchurian Incident, a staged attack on a Japanese railroad that provided the pretext for Japan?s 1931 invasion and subsequent occupation of Northeastern China. Sept. 18 has long been burned into the Chinese psyche as a day of shame and is a sensitive date even when Beijing?s relations with Tokyo are not strained.

The government appears keen, however, to ensure that demonstrations do not get out of hand, as they did in the southern city of Shenzhen on Saturday, when riot police had to use tear gas and water cannon to disperse angry protesters.

A front page editorial in the People?s Daily, the official organ of the ruling Communist Party, cautioned on Monday that although ?our anger is irrepressible and the enthusiasm of the youth of China must have release ? a civilized attitude abiding by the rule of law should be the basic conduct of the citizenry.?

The editorial urged protesters to ?express [their] patriotism in a legal and orderly way.?

But the islands themselves could become the focus of trouble. A group of Hong Kong activists are planning to try to land on the islands on Tuesday, according to China National Radio. Meanwhile around 1,000 Chinese fishing boats are expected to head for waters near the islands ? following the end on Sunday night of a three month moratorium on fishing there for conservation purposes ? as soon as a typhoon warning is lifted.?

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda pledged Sunday night to ?firmly protect the Senkaku? and to ?take all possible measures for that.? On Friday, Japanese coastguard vessels forced six Chinese surveillance ships to leave the waters near the islands, but some observers suggest they may return to offer Chinese fishermen protection.

?Given Beijing?s insistence that the Diaoyu are in Chinese waters it is more likely the fishing boats will enter them,? says Professor Feng. ?That means a risk of clashes and a vicious circle."

Yan Xuetong, head of the Institute for Contemporary International Relations at Tsinghua University in Beijing adds:??I cannot tell how this is going to end.?But I think the crisis will continue to escalate.?

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he's a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy's old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a "history" with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. A joint project of Hollywood prodigies George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, with a script co-written by Lawrence Kasdan and Philip Kaufman, among others, Raiders of the Lost Ark is not so much a movie as a 115-minute thrill ride. Costing 22 million dollars (nearly three times the original estimate), Raiders of the Lost Ark reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It was followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1985) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), as well as a short-lived TV-series "prequel." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Canon PowerShot S110 packs WiFi and touch-enabled display (hands-on video)

Canon PowerShot S110 handson video

It seems like just yesterday that Canon announced its top-of-the-line PowerShot S100, and now the company is back to demo its brand new S110. This latest point-and-shoot flagship features a very similar body size and design, but adds WiFi functionality, enabling you to interface with a smartphone app to upload pictures and tag your images using your mobile's GPS (interestingly, GPS no longer comes built-in). Spec-wise, the camera's packing a 12.1-megapixel, 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor and an f/2.0-5.9, 24-120mm lens. It also offers an ISO range of 80-12,800, and includes a 460k-dot 3-inch LCD with touch functionality, letting you tap your way through menus instead of using the hardware controls (which, thankfully, are also still available). The S110 is still very much a premium product, with a solid metal construction and a $450 price tag to match.

We went hands-on with both the black and white versions of the S110 at Photokina today, and were quite pleased with the design. The black version includes a matte black finish with a slightly rougher feel, which we preferred over the white's smooth, glossy paint job. Both cameras feel solid, and are clearly still pocketable. The display was bright and vibrant, and the touchscreen responded as expected -- we can't say it'll be our first pick when it comes to navigation, but it does allow for some useful shortcuts. We weren't able to shoot with the S110, but it does offer RAW captures, along with 1080/24p video shooting and an impressive 10 fps burst mode.
